Suspected Arson Attack on Conservative MP Mike Freer’s Office

2 min read

The recent incident involving a suspected arson attack on the office of Conservative MP Mike Freer has raised concerns. The office, located in Finchley, London, was damaged by fire, prompting a response from No 10, stating that it is “clearly concerning” and emphasizing the importance of MPs being able to carry out their work without fear.

Mike Freer, who represents the Finchley and Golders Green constituency, has expressed his belief that the attack may be related to his pro-Israel stance. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the fire occurred on Christmas Eve, starting in a shed at the MP’s office in Ballards Lane, Finchley.

Freer has previously experienced incidents where he has been attacked due to his views on the Middle East, and he believes that the level of attacks in his local area increases when there is unrest in the Middle East.

The MP has represented the constituency since 2010 and currently holds the position of parliamentary under-secretary at the Ministry of Justice. Last year, Freer and his staff decided to wear stab vests and carry panic alarms after learning that Ali Harbi Ali, who later killed Southend West MP Sir David Amess, had conducted reconnaissance at his Finchley office.

Rishi Sunak’s spokesperson has expressed limited comment on the matter due to the ongoing investigation. However, she acknowledged the concerning nature of the incident and the importance of ensuring that MPs and their staff can perform their parliamentary duties safely and without fear.

There has been a noticeable increase in antisemitic incidents recorded in the UK, with a spike in Islamophobic incidents following the Hamas attacks on October 7. As of now, the police have not provided any significant updates on the case.

In response to the incident, No 10 emphasized the importance of MPs and their staff being able to carry out their parliamentary duties without fear. The security of MPs is constantly reviewed, and the government is committed to ensuring their safety.
