Stephen Curry Joins Ownership Group for TGL San Francisco in New Tech-Infused Golf League

Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry has joined the ownership group representing San Francisco in TGL (The Golf League) presented by SoFi. TGL is a new tech-infused golf league being developed by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. Curry, a two-time NBA MVP and nine-time All-Star, is leading the ownership group alongside Marc Lasry’s Avenue Sports Fund. Lasry, a co-founder and CEO of Avenue Capital Group, is also a former co-owner of the Milwaukee Bucks. Additionally, Andre Iguodala and Klay Thompson, who have played alongside Curry in leading the Warriors to four NBA championships, are part of the ownership group.

Avenue Capital Group is partnering with TMRW Sports as a founding TGL team, and Curry and his fellow owners are excited to represent Northern California, the center of tech innovation, in this extraordinary new sports league. TGL San Francisco aims to develop a talented team of players as they prepare for the league’s inaugural season, set to begin in January 2024. The team’s ownership group includes Andre Iguodala and Klay Thompson, further adding to its star power and basketball pedigree.

Curry, Iguodala, and Thompson join a growing list of athletes and celebrities who have invested in TGL. The league is scheduled to kick off its first season in January, with matches taking place at a purpose-built arena in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Other notable team owners include Arthur Blank (Atlanta Drive GC), John Henry (TGL Boston), Serena and Venus Williams (Los Angeles Golf Club), and Steven A. Cohen (TGL New York). Limited partners in the Los Angeles Golf Club include Michelle Wie West, Alex Morgan, Servando Carrasco, and NBA star Giannis Antetokounmpo and his brothers. A sixth ownership group is expected to be announced soon.

Northern California was chosen as the location for the TGL San Francisco team due to its status as a hub for tech innovation and its renowned golf courses. TMRW Sports Group and TGL CEO Mike McCarley expressed excitement about combining Avenue Capital Group’s business expertise with the championship mentality brought by NBA superstars like Curry, Iguodala, and Thompson. The addition of this team is expected to generate significant energy in the Bay Area and worldwide.

Curry, known for his passion for golf and his scratch handicap, was recently selected to receive the Charlie Sifford Award for his efforts in promoting diversity in golf. In support of high school athletes across the country, he launched “Underrated Golf” two years ago to provide equity, access, and opportunities. Curry has also funded the Howard University golf team for six years, enabling the historically Black college to compete at the Division I level. He will receive the award at the World Golf Hall of Fame ceremony in Pinehurst, North Carolina, on June 10.

In other TGL news, the league recently finalized its 24-player roster, adding five new players, including Patrick Cantlay and U.S. Open winner Wyndham Clark. These players will be joining the likes of McIlroy and Woods, as well as other major championship winners such as Jon Rahm, Collin Morikawa, Justin Thomas, Shane Lowry, Matt Fitzpatrick, Adam Scott, Keegan Bradley, and Justin Rose in competing in the league. TGL consists of six teams, each with a four-man roster. Matches will feature three golfers playing for each team in a match-play format on a virtual course with a short-game complex. The season will consist of 15 regular-season matches, followed by semifinals and finals, all of which will be broadcast on ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPN+.
