Brazilian and Al-Hilal forward Neymar is set to undergo surgery after suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus in his left knee while on international duty. The injury occurred during Brazil’s 2-0 defeat by Uruguay in a 2026 World Cup qualifier.

Neymar, who was taken off the field on a stretcher in tears, landed awkwardly after a challenge in the first half of the match in Montevideo. The extent of his recovery period is still uncertain.

The Brazilian Football Confederation president, Ednaldo Rodrigues, expressed the importance of having Neymar back in good health for the sake of Brazilian and world football. “Football is happier when he’s on the pitch,” Rodrigues said in a statement.

This injury adds to a series of setbacks Neymar has faced in recent years. Throughout his time with Paris St-Germain, he endured multiple months on the sidelines due to ankle injuries. Additionally, in the 2022 World Cup, he missed two games after getting injured in Brazil’s opening match against Serbia.

Neymar’s injury history also includes a significant setback during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. In the quarter-final against Colombia, he suffered a broken bone in his back following a bad challenge. Although Brazil won the match, Neymar was ruled out for the rest of the tournament. Consequently, Brazil suffered a devastating 7-1 defeat to Germany in the semi-finals.

Despite his injury woes, Neymar remains a crucial figure in both Brazilian and world football. His move from Paris St-Germain to Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia this summer was met with enthusiasm, and fans are eagerly anticipating his return to the pitch.

The surgery and recovery process will be critical for Neymar’s future performance, and football enthusiasts worldwide hope for his swift return to action.
