Mohamed Salah Calls for End to Violence in Gaza, Urges Humanitarian Aid
2 min readLiverpool forward Mohamed Salah has broken his silence on the ongoing violence between Israel and Hamas. In a video message posted on his social media accounts, Salah called for an immediate end to the conflict and urged for humanitarian aid to be allowed into the besieged Palestinian enclave of Gaza. This comes after Salah faced criticism in his native Egypt for staying silent on the issue for over a week.
According to the Gaza health ministry, the Israeli air strikes on Gaza since October 7 have resulted in the death of at least 3,478 Palestinians, with 12,065 others being injured. These strikes were in response to the actions of Hamas, a Palestinian militant group, who stormed into Israeli towns, causing widespread violence and casualties.
To prevent the Israel-Hamas war from escalating into a regional conflict, United States President Joe Biden made an urgent visit to Israel. Following his visit, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that limited humanitarian aid would be allowed into Gaza from Egypt, following a request from Biden.
In his video message, Salah expressed his sorrow for the violence and emphasized the need for immediate humanitarian aid to Gaza. He stated, “The massacres need to stop; families are being torn apart. What’s clear now is that humanitarian aid to Gaza must be allowed immediately. The people there are in terrible conditions.”
Salah’s silence on the issue had faced backlash from Egyptian soccer fans, some of whom started an online campaign to unfollow him on social media. The criticism intensified when a blast at a Gaza hospital resulted in the death of hundreds of Palestinians, with both Hamas and Israel trading blame for the incident.
“The scenes at the hospital last night were horrifying. The people of Gaza need food, water, and medical supplies urgently,” Salah continued. “I’m calling on world leaders to come together to prevent further slaughter of innocent souls. Humanity must prevail.”
Salah’s plea for intervention and humanitarian aid reflects the dire situation in Gaza, where the civilian population is suffering due to the ongoing violence. It is hoped that his message will bring attention to the urgent need for peace and assistance in the region.
