MLB Great Steve Garvey Announces Senate Campaign in California to Help Turn Around the State

2 min read

MLB great Steve Garvey, who helped the Los Angeles Dodgers win the World Series in 1981, is looking to bring stability to a ‘dysfunctional Washington’ and revive the ‘heartbeat’ of California by entering the race as a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate in California. Since announcing his campaign in October, Garvey and his team have been actively engaging with residents across the state to discuss issues such as inflation, crime, education, homelessness, and support for law enforcement.

Garvey, a one-time National League MVP, played for the Dodgers for 14 years and another five for the San Diego Padres from 1969 to 1987. He’s now looking to take the experience from the sport to the halls of Congress. His team-building skills, honed through baseball, have prepared him to put together a winning team in politics. On his first day in office, if elected, Garvey plans to meet with each senator to build relationships and start consensus-building efforts.

California has faced numerous challenges, including financial and safety issues, which Garvey believes have made it a ‘murmur’ instead of the ‘heartbeat of America.’ His campaign has prioritized addressing these challenges through a free market, capitalism, and supporting small businesses. He also emphasizes the importance of ensuring that those who are arrested are not immediately released, praising the hardworking police and sheriffs who are committed to serving the people and providing peace.

Garvey’s campaign focuses on education, understanding the pathways for those living on the streets to reconnect with society, and taking care of veterans. He plans to improve the quality of life for Californians and relieve economic burdens. The primary election is scheduled for March 5, 2024, with the general election taking place on November 5, 2024.

California has not elected a Republican to represent it in the U.S. Senate since Pete Wilson in 1988. Heavy hitters in the Democratic Party, including Reps. Adam Schiff, Katie Porter, and Barbara Lee, are vying for the seat. Garvey remains undeterred by his competition, focusing on messaging to the people of California and being their voice in Congress.
