Jim Jordan Fails to Secure House Speakership

3 min read

Republican Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio has faced disappointments in his bid for the House speakership. In two rounds of voting, he has failed to garner enough support from his fellow Republicans.

During Tuesday’s vote, 20 Republicans voted against Jordan, which was a significant blow to his candidacy. This number is far greater than what he could afford to lose considering the narrow majority that Republicans currently hold in Congress. In order to be elected as speaker, a candidate needs to secure a majority of the full House.

Unfortunately for Jordan, he faced more opposition in the subsequent Wednesday vote, with 22 Republicans voting against him. As a result, the House remains in a state of deadlock, as it has been without a speaker for the past two weeks following the ousting of Kevin McCarthy.

Below is a list of House Republicans who voted against Jordan in each ballot:

1. Don Bacon of Nebraska voted for former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
2. Lori Chavez-DeRemer of Oregon voted for McCarthy.
