The Illinois high-power semiautomatic weapons ban is a law that prohibits the possession and sale of certain high-power semiautomatic weapons in the state. The ban includes weapons such as AR-15s, which are commonly used for hunting and sport shooting. The law also requires residents of Illinois to register their guns with the state police by January 1, 2023. Failure to register can result in a misdemeanor charge.

The ban was signed into law by Governor J.B. Pritzker in January 2023. It includes penalties for individuals who carry or possess certain high-power semiautomatic weapons, manufacture, sell, deliver, import, or purchase them. The law also includes statutory penalties for anyone who sells, manufactures, delivers, imports, possesses, or purchases certain attachments or .50 caliber cartridges.

The ban has faced criticism from gun rights advocates who argue that it infringes on their Second Amendment rights. They argue that the ban is unconstitutional and that it will not prevent crime. However, supporters of the ban argue that it is necessary to reduce gun violence and protect public safety.

The Illinois high-power semiautomatic weapons ban is just one example of the ongoing debate over gun control in the United States. As the country continues to grapple with gun violence, it is likely that this issue will remain a contentious topic in the political arena.
