House Republicans Recommend Contempt of Congress Charge Against Hunter Biden for Subpoena Defiance

House Republicans, in a move to hold President Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, accountable for his refusal to comply with a subpoena for closed-door testimony, have released a resolution recommending that the House find him in contempt of Congress. The resolution and accompanying report were made public on Monday, and the House Oversight and Accountability Committee is scheduled to consider the resolution on Wednesday morning.

The report accuses Hunter Biden of contemptuous behavior for failing to comply with the committee’s subpoenas while appearing nearby on the Capitol grounds to read a prepared statement on the same matters. The chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Accountability, James Comer, and House Judiciary Committee chair Jim Jordan, issued a joint statement expressing their intent to hold Hunter Biden accountable for his unlawful actions.

To pass the resolution, a majority of the GOP-controlled House must approve it. The president’s son, Hunter Biden, was called to testify before closed doors on Dec. 13, 2023, but he did not appear for the testimony. Instead, he spoke to the media and expressed his willingness to testify publicly. However, Comer declined this offer, insisting that Hunter Biden must provide private testimony first.

Hunter Biden’s lawyer, Abbe Lowell, responded to the threat of a contempt of Congress vote by stating that House Republicans are “playing politics” and that they should allow Hunter Biden to testify publicly if they are interested in getting the facts.

Republicans have been investigating Hunter Biden’s business dealings and any potential connection to President Biden for years. Despite their efforts, they have yet to establish criminal wrongdoing by the president. In response to the ongoing investigation, House Republicans voted last month to formalize their impeachment inquiry into the president.
