Heckling Incident at Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Town Hall
3 min readAlexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a socialist lawmaker representing the 14th congressional district of New York, faced a heated town hall on Thursday, February 24, 2024. The event, which was held in Queens, New York City, was intended to showcase the benefits of the Green New Deal, a progressive environmental policy proposal. However, the town hall took an unexpected turn when two attendees heckled Ocasio-Cortez, accusing her of prioritizing the needs of illegal immigrants over those of her constituents.
The first heckler, identified as Jonathan David Rinaldi, interrupted Ocasio-Cortez as she spoke about environmental justice provisions and climate change policies under the Green New Deal. Rinaldi, who is challenging Ocasio-Cortez for her congressional seat, shouted, “My name is Jonathan David Rinaldi and I’m running for Congress against AOC, the Green New Deal is a scam.” He went on to criticize Ocasio-Cortez for giving away NYCHA apartments to illegal immigrants and providing them with $10,000 a day.
Another man then joined in the shouting, demanding that the border be secured and accusing Ocasio-Cortez of caring only about illegal immigrants and their votes. The man also referenced the vicious attack by migrants on the NYPD last month. Both hecklers were soon drowned out by Ocasio-Cortez’s supporters, who shouted “AOC, AOC” and clapped their hands.
As Rinaldi was being led out of the venue, he shouted, “Every single one of us is being sold out by people that have brought illegals here to vote.” He then clashed with an Ocasio-Cortez supporter before heckling her again. “You only represent the illegal aliens,” he shouted.
Ocasio-Cortez responded by smiling on the stage as security tried to eject the hecklers. She then commented on her stance on immigration, stating, “Clearly, this community — Astoria, Jackson Heights, also across the Bronx – clearly supports progressive immigration policies that welcomes all of our neighbors.” She went on to say that her constituents support a path to citizenship and an end to draconian immigration policies.
The hecklers were demonstrating against illegal immigration and not all immigration. While illegal and legal migrants are prohibited from voting, the New York City Council passed legislation in 2021 that would have given non-citizens residing in the country for at least 30 days the right to vote. However, the law was ruled illegal several months later and an appeal to the ruling was denied by a New York state appeals court.
Nearly 7.3 million migrants have illegally crossed the southwest border under President Biden’s watch, a number greater than the population of 36 individual states. New York City has provided for more than 178,600 migrants since the spring of 2022, with approximately 65,000 still in the city’s care.
