Google Expands Real-Money Gaming Apps on Google Play Store
2 min readGoogle has recently announced that it will be expanding the types and operators of real-money gaming (RMG) apps on its Google Play Store. This change comes after the company conducted several pilot programs in different regions since 2021 to determine how to support more RMG operators and game types.
Initially, Google only allowed RMG apps that fell under a game type regulated by the government. However, with this new policy, Google will allow more game types and operators not covered by an existing licensing framework. This means that a wider range of RMG apps will be available on the Google Play Store, particularly in India, Mexico, and Brazil, where the new policy will be enforced starting on June 30.
Google’s pilot tests in India included apps offering Rummy card games and Daily Fantasy Sports. Operators part of its pilot programs will be able to release their current applications and other types of RMG apps like any other developer, as long as they comply with local laws. Google plans to expand the availability of RMG apps in other regions in the future, but age requirements to access those games will remain in place.
Developers will still be required to geo-fence their products, meaning they’ll only be available where they’re legal. Google has also revealed that it’s “evolving its service fee model” for RMG apps to help sustain the Android and Play ecosystems. Currently, RMG apps can’t use Google Play billing, but this may change if the company intends to take a cut of developers’ earnings.
