Gareth Widdop Leaves Castleford Tigers by Mutual Consent

1 min read

Gareth Widdop, the 34-year-old rugby league player, has left Castleford Tigers “by mutual consent” after one season with the team. During his time at the Mend-a-Hose Jungle, Widdop played 21 games for the club after transferring from Warrington Wolves. Known for his stints with Melbourne Storm and St George Illawarra, the half-back managed to score one try and kicked 37 goals during his tenure with the Tigers.

The departure of Widdop doesn’t come as a surprise to Castleford Tigers, as it was a decision that had been anticipated by the club’s director of rugby and operations, Danny Wilson. Wilson mentioned that the club had discussions towards the end of the season and had already predicted Widdop’s departure. As a result, the team made strategic moves to bring in Luke Hooley and Rowan Milnes for the 2024 season.

Expressing his gratitude towards Widdop, Wilson thanked him for his contributions to the club during his time there and wished him well for the future. He also emphasized that the addition of Hooley and Milnes would help fill the void left by Widdop’s departure in the upcoming season.

The departure of Gareth Widdop marks the end of his time with Castleford Tigers, but it also signifies the club’s proactive approach in preparing for the future by bringing in new talents to strengthen their lineup.
