From Lemons to Cricket Stardom: Anesu Mushangwe’s Inspiring Journey
2 min readAnesu Mushangwe, a Zimbabwean cricket player, has made history by becoming the first Zimbabwean to win the Women’s Big Bash League in Australia. Her journey to success was not an easy one, as she faced numerous challenges along the way.
Mushangwe’s love for cricket began at a young age, but she had to skip athletics lessons in her hometown of Chitungwiza to pursue her passion. She started practicing with a friend who could not walk, learning how to catch and throw with skill using lemons as makeshift cricket balls since they could not afford the real thing.
Despite her early setbacks, Mushangwe’s talent was evident, and she eventually became a right-hand leg-spinner. However, her career faced another obstacle when she could not join Zimbabwe’s Under-19 team due to the high cost of a passport. It wasn’t until she was 18 that she began taking cricket seriously again, deciding to focus on her spin bowling skills.
Mushangwe’s determination and hard work paid off when she was offered a move to Australia, where talent-spotters had arranged her flights and visa. She quickly rose through the ranks at Adelaide’s Glenelg Cricket Club, becoming the T20 captain.
Her impressive performances for the South Australian Scorpions in the Women’s National Cricket League caught the attention of the national team, but she faced yet another challenge when visa issues prevented her from playing for several years.
In April 2022, Mushangwe finally returned to the international stage, helping Zimbabwe win a tri-series against Namibia and Uganda as the leading wicket-taker. This achievement allowed her to sign a contract with Adelaide Strikers, becoming the first Zimbabwean to do so in the Women’s Big Bash League.
Mushangwe’s debut season with the Adelaide Strikers was limited, but she became a key player during the 2023 campaign. Her exceptional performance in the final match against Brisbane Heat, which secured the team’s victory, showcased her immense talent and dedication to the sport.
Despite her numerous challenges and setbacks, Mushangwe’s unwavering determination and passion for cricket have propelled her to the top of her game. Her inspiring journey serves as a reminder that with hard work and perseverance, even the most difficult obstacles can be overcome.
