Fallout New Vegas Returns Through Magic: The Gathering
4 min readFallout New Vegas, the beloved open-world RPG developed by Obsidian Entertainment, has been a fan favorite since its release in 2010. The game’s rich storyline, engaging characters, and immersive world have captivated players for over a decade. However, for those who crave a new Fallout experience, a recent announcement from Magic: The Gathering may be just what they’ve been waiting for.
Magic: The Gathering, the collectible card game created by Wizards of the Coast, has a long history of collaborating with various franchises to create unique and exciting card sets. The latest addition to this list is the Universes Beyond: Fallout expansion, which brings the post-apocalyptic world of Fallout New Vegas to the world of Magic: The Gathering.
The Universes Beyond: Fallout expansion includes four preconstructed decks, each themed around a specific Fallout character. These decks are designed to be played right out of the box, making it an excellent option for Fallout fans who want to explore the game’s world in a new way. Let’s take a closer look at each of the decks and what makes them unique.
1. Caesar – Hail, Caesar
Caesar, the enigmatic and charismatic leader of the Legion, is the focus of the first deck. This Red-White-Black deck is built around the theme of sacrificing creatures for various benefits. The deck includes cards like Caesar, Legion’s Emperor, and Mr. House, President and CEO, which allow players to sacrifice creatures to gain advantages or deal damage to their opponents.
Additionally, the deck features a sub-theme of Quest counters, which have been used in Magic: The Gathering in a limited capacity before. These counters take on a new meaning when themed around an RPG full of literal quests. The legendary creatures in the deck often have Quest counters, and this crossover has pulled inspiration from every Fallout game, stretching back to the very first.
2. Dogmeat – Scrappy Survivors
The second deck is led by everyone’s favorite canine companion, Dogmeat. This Green-White deck is focused on token generation and creature rebirth. Players can use cards like Dogmeat, Tunnel Snake, and Butch DeLoria, Tunnel Snake, to generate tokens and bring back creatures that have been sacrificed or destroyed.
The deck also includes cards like Charisma Bobblehead and Luck Bobblehead, which provide various benefits when certain conditions are met. For example, the Luck Bobblehead lets players roll dice to generate mana-producing Treasure tokens, and if they manage to roll a specific combination, they can even win the game outright.
3. The Wise Mothman – Mutant Menace
The third deck is themed around the enigmatic and ominous Mothman. This Rad-themed deck is focused on Energy generation and artifact manipulation. Players can use cards like The Wise Mothman, Mutant Menace, and Liberty Prime to generate Energy and manipulate artifacts to gain advantages or deal damage to their opponents.
The deck also includes cards like Mothman’s Favor and Mothman’s Blessing, which provide various benefits when certain conditions are met. For example, Mothman’s Favor lets players draw extra cards when they play a Rad-themed creature, while Mothman’s Blessing lets players gain life when they play an artifact.
4. Dr. Madison Li – Science!
The final deck is led by the brilliant and resourceful Dr. Madison Li. This Blue-Red deck is focused on card draw and spell manipulation. Players can use cards like Dr. Madison Li, Science!, and V.A.T.S. to draw extra cards and manipulate spells to gain advantages or deal damage to their opponents.
The deck also includes cards like Survivor’s Med Kit and Charisma Bobblehead, which provide various benefits when certain conditions are met. For example, the Survivor’s Med Kit lets players gain life when they discard a card, while the Charisma Bobblehead lets players draw extra cards when they have a certain number of cards in their hand.
Each of these decks contains a mix of new cards unique to this release and existing cards reprinted with new Fallout-themed art. While the cards inside can be picked apart and used in other decks, these four are designed as a set for the four-player Commander format. This allows Fallout fans to simply use Magic: The Gathering’s game system in their favorite video game world without having to build custom decks.
The Universes Beyond: Fallout expansion will officially launch on March 8, 2024, though it is available for pre-order now. Wizards of the Coast is also selling Collector Boosters, which give players a chance to open cards from the decks in special Pip-Boy themed art treatments. Additionally, Magic: The Gathering has upcoming crossovers scheduled for Assassin’s Creed, Final Fantasy, and even Marvel.
In conclusion, the Universes Beyond: Fallout expansion offers Fallout fans a new way to explore the world of their favorite game. With four preconstructed decks themed around iconic Fallout characters, players can enjoy the rich storytelling and immersive gameplay of Fallout New Vegas in a new and exciting format. Whether you’re a seasoned Magic: The Gathering player or a Fallout fan looking to try something new, this expansion is sure to provide hours of entertainment.
