The first time I saw Lysfanga: The Time Shift Warrior was during the Summer Game Fest last year. The game’s brief minute-long reveal trailer left a lasting impression, and I have eagerly anticipated its release ever since. The wait is finally over, as Lysfanga: The Time Shift Warrior is set to launch on February 13th on PC.

In preparation for the game’s release, I had the opportunity to speak with the developers at Sand Door Studio and get a hands-on experience with the game’s first level.

Thibault Legouet, the game director and lead game designer at Sand Door, shared his inspiration for creating Lysfanga. He had always been fascinated by time travel in video games but felt that the mechanic was often underutilized. “Time travel was used in puzzles or in stories mainly with no regard to gameplay,” Legouet explained. “And I really wanted to put it in the center of the gameplay in a way that wasn’t done before.”

The core gameplay mechanic of Lysfanga revolves around the concept of time travel and using your past lives to overcome challenges. Each fight is more than just a simple combat encounter; it’s also a puzzle to be solved. Players are given a time limit and a certain number of chances to defeat all enemies within the arena. Once the time limit expires, they are transported back to the beginning of the fight, and their past lives, or “remnants,” assist them in defeating the same enemies they killed in the previous loop. The number of chances determines how many times players must kill every enemy and complete the encounter.

As Legouet put it, “It’s like racing against yourself as a ghost driver, but with fighting.”

During my brief playtime with Lysfanga, I was impressed by the depth and complexity of the time travel mechanics. The game offers a unique and engaging combat experience that requires strategy, quick thinking, and raw power to take down enemies and complete encounters within the given time limit.
