Epic Games Cuts 16% of Workforce and Sells Bandcamp Amid Financial Struggles

2 min read

Epic Games, the company behind the immensely popular video game Fortnite, is taking drastic measures to address financial challenges. In a surprising move, the company is cutting 870 jobs, which amounts to approximately 16% of its workforce. Additionally, Epic Games is selling Bandcamp, an online music platform it acquired just a year ago.

The decision to downsize and sell Bandcamp was communicated to employees in a memo from Epic Games’ CEO, Tim Sweeney. In the memo, Sweeney explained that despite their efforts to reduce costs, the company was still “spending way more money than we earn.” He further stated, “We concluded that layoffs are the only way, and that doing them now and on this scale will stabilize our finances.”

Epic Games had been actively working to reduce expenditures, including implementing a freeze on new hiring and reducing operating expenses related to marketing and events. However, these measures fell short of achieving financial sustainability, prompting the need for layoffs.

As part of this restructuring, Bandcamp, known for being a platform that allowed independent artists to earn more from their music compared to traditional streaming services, will no longer be under Epic Games’ ownership. Instead, it is set to join Songtradr, a music marketplace company that supports artists. The acquisition of Bandcamp by Epic Games in 2022 had raised questions about how the two businesses would align, and this move suggests that the integration may not have been successful.

The specific locations of the job cuts within the company have not been disclosed as of yet. However, CEO Tim Sweeney assured that these reductions would not disrupt the company’s core development or essential business operations. He also revealed that a majority of the job cuts were in departments that were “outside of core development.”

Epic Games is renowned for its Unreal Engine, a game development engine that powers several successful titles, including Fortnite and Gears of War. Fortnite, in particular, is a global phenomenon with an estimated 400 million registered users.

This significant announcement from Epic Games showcases the ongoing challenges faced by even the most successful companies in the gaming industry. As the company works to regain financial stability, it also raises questions about the impact of this decision on the gaming community and the employees affected by the layoffs.
