Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel Brings on Veteran Developers from Mortal Kombat, Diablo, Hitman, and More
10 min readCD Projekt Red, the Polish video game developer behind the critically acclaimed Cyberpunk 2077, is gearing up for its follow-up to the dystopian RPG, codenamed Project Orion. The studio has announced several high-profile additions to its team, including developers with impressive resumes from franchises like Hitman, Diablo, Mortal Kombat, and more.
Dan Hernberg, who will serve as executive producer, has a wealth of experience in the industry. He previously served as head of production at Amazon Games and lead product manager at Blizzard Entertainment. Ryan Barnard, who will help as design director, is best known for his work as a game director at Ubisoft Massive and gameplay director at IO Interactive.
The engineering director position will be handled by Alan Villani, who previously aided with technical direction on past Mortal Kombat games. Former Control, Dishonored: Death of The Outsider, and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora developer Anna Megill will serve on Project Orion as lead writer. Finally, Alexander Freed will also help with writing after previously working with studios like DICE, Obsidian Entertainment, and Wizards of the Coast.
“As work on the follow-up to Cyberpunk 2077, codename Project Orion, enters early stages of development at CD PROJEKT RED North America,” CD Projekt Red said in a press release, “the company is currently hiring for various positions across its Boston and Vancouver locations.”
Those interested in applying to work on Project Orion can check out open positions here.
Details on the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel are scarce, but we do know that the team is hoping for a similar evolution as The Witcher series. This means that Orion will offer even more gameplay enhancements and features when it eventually arrives. The studio is also considering adding multiplayer, a feature absent from the original game.
CD Projekt Red’s Boston location is currently leading the development of the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel. The team is also focusing on The Witcher 4, which is expected to be released in the future.

I really liked 2077 but the game wasn’t what I expected from the reveal trailer. It was much less linear and had fewer RPG elements than I thought. I’m hoping for a more open-world experience in the sequel.
That being said, I did enjoy the story and the world of Night City. I just hope they can improve on the gameplay and make it more immersive.

I really enjoyed Cyberpunk 2077 but I wasn’t a fan of the braindance sequences. They took me out of the game and felt like a chore. I hope they’re either optional or shorter in the sequel.
Other than that, I thought the game was great. The world was immersive, the story was engaging, and the characters were well-written. I can’t wait to see what CD Projekt Red does next.

I agree with Unknown4x4. The braindance sequences were a letdown for me. They felt like a distraction from the core gameplay loop and took me out of the experience.
I did enjoy the world of Night City and the story, though. I’m hoping for a more open-world experience in the sequel, with fewer linear sequences and more RPG elements.

It’s strange that the lead narrative designer for The Witcher 3 left for this project. I thought The Witcher 3 was close to launching a sequel.

It’s easy for CD Projekt Red to hire these developers since they’ve all been laid off from other studios recently.
