The Indianapolis Colts have been dealt a major blow as their rookie quarterback, Anthony Richardson, will undergo season-ending surgery to repair his right throwing shoulder. Richardson, who was the fourth overall draft pick this year, suffered an AC joint sprain during a game against the Titans on October 8th. After consultations with the team’s medical staff and specialists from across the country, it was determined that surgery was the best course of action for Richardson’s long-term health.

Not all shoulder sprains require surgery, but due to the nature of the quarterback position and the necessary range of motion and movements involved, it was deemed the best option for Richardson. Despite the disappointment of missing out on a significant portion of his rookie season, head coach Shane Steichen believes that this setback can be a learning experience for Richardson.

Steichen acknowledges the importance of prioritizing Richardson’s longevity and future in the NFL. The team invested heavily in him as the fourth overall pick, and ensuring his long-term health is crucial. Steichen emphasizes that Richardson will still be actively involved with the team, attending meetings and practices, allowing him to continue his growth and development as a player.

Moving forward, the Colts will now rely on backup quarterback Gardner Minshew to lead the team for the rest of the season. After losing to the Jaguars in Week 6, during which Minshew committed four turnovers, Steichen remains confident in Minshew’s abilities and his potential to succeed in the Colts’ offense.

Richardson had shown great promise in his limited game time, completing 50 of 84 pass attempts for 577 yards and three touchdowns. He also displayed his dual-threat abilities by rushing for 136 yards and scoring four rushing touchdowns. These statistics highlight Richardson’s impact on the field and the challenges he presents to opposing defenses.

However, Richardson’s playing style, which involves running the ball and making plays outside the pocket, also exposed him to hits and ultimately led to his season-ending injury. Steichen is hesitant to suggest that Richardson should change his approach, as his ability to create plays with his legs is a valuable asset for the team.

The Colts will now have to navigate the remainder of the season without their promising rookie quarterback. It will be a test of their depth and resilience as they adjust to Minshew as their primary signal-caller. Despite the setback, owner Jim Irsay remains optimistic about Richardson’s future and expects a full recovery. The Colts organization remains committed to supporting Richardson’s long-term health and development as they look towards a promising future.
