Commandos: Origins – A New Entry in the Stealth-Tactics Series
2 min readThe Commandos series is set to make a return with Commandos: Origins, a forthcoming game from a new developer, scheduled for release next year. This installment in the series will take players back to the early days of World War 2 to explore the origins of the squad of stealthy, rope-shimmying operatives. An announcement trailer has been unveiled, providing a glimpse into what fans can expect from this highly anticipated title.
For those who may not have played the original Commandos, it was one of the pioneers in the stealth-tactics genre. The gameplay involved methodically infiltrating heavily-guarded enemy encampments using the unique abilities of a small squad of experts. In Commandos: Origins, six of these experts are making their return in this prequel. The returning characters include Jack O’Hara, known as “the Green Beret,” Thomas Hancock, or “the Sapper,” Francis Woolridge, known as “the Sniper,” Samuel Brooklyn, “the Driver,” James Blackwood, “the Marine,” and Rene Duchamp, “the Spy.”
The game appears to stay true to the original formula, promising a better user interface for initiating simultaneous actions, offering numerous approaches to complete over ten missions, and introducing a two-player co-op mode that can be played both online and in split-screen.
Kalypso, the publishers, had been laying the groundwork for a new Commandos game by establishing a new internal studio in 2019. In the interim, there have been HD remasters of the original stealth-tactics trilogy, with some initial bugs but ultimately delivering strong results.
Recent years have seen a resurgence in the stealth tactics genre, largely thanks to the efforts of Mimimi. They played a pivotal role in reviving the genre with Shadow Tactics, solidifying its return with the modern classic Desperados 3, and achieving further acclaim with Shadow Gambit. However, there’s a cloud over the future of the genre, as Mimimi announced their closure just two weeks after the release of Shadow Gambit. Commandos: Origins has the potential to pick up where they left off and keep the genre thriving.
