Cincinnati Reds Offseason Updates: Injuries, Roster Moves, and Signings

2 min read

The Cincinnati Reds have been actively making changes to their roster during the offseason, addressing injuries and adding new talent to their team. Injuries and moves have been a significant focus for the Reds, as they work to strengthen their lineup and improve their chances of success in the upcoming season.

One of the most recent signings by the Reds is outfielder Conner Capel, who signed a Minor League contract with an invitation to big league camp at Spring Training. Capel spent most of 2023 with the A’s Triple-A club but played 32 games for Oakland and batted .260 with a .701 OPS. This addition to the team is expected to provide depth and versatility in the outfield.

Another significant move made by the Reds is the signing of catcher Austin Wynns to a one-year contract. Wynns will earn $950,000 from his split contract in 2024 if he makes the big league club and $300,000 if he is at Triple-A Louisville. The Reds already have Tyler Stephenson and Luke Maile as catchers on their 40-man roster, but Wynns’ signing provides additional depth and insurance for the team.

In addition to these signings, the Reds have also made some roster moves. Outfielder TJ Hopkins was traded to the Giants, and in return, the Reds will receive a player to be named later or cash. Hopkins struggled during his time with the Reds, hitting .171 without a home run in 23 games.

The Reds have also been dealing with several injuries, which have impacted their performance on the field. Relief pitcher Tejay Antone is still recovering from right elbow discomfort, and his expected return date is yet to be determined. Meanwhile, left-handed pitcher Nick Lodolo is expected to miss the entire 2024 season due to a left tibia stress reaction. Lodolo underwent a second opinion in New York, and it was confirmed that he would not require surgery or wear a boot. Instead, rest is expected to help his leg heal, with the hope that he will be able to return for the 2024 season.

Another injury that has affected the Reds is the one suffered by left-handed pitcher Reiver Sanmartin, who underwent Tommy John surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow. Sanmartin’s recovery is expected to take a full year, meaning he will likely miss the entire 2024 season as well.

Despite these challenges, the Reds have been working hard to improve their team during the offseason. They have made several signings and roster moves, addressing both injuries and depth issues. As the team prepares for the upcoming season, they will continue to focus on strengthening their lineup and ensuring that their players are healthy and ready to compete at the highest level.
