The Maine Secretary of State’s office had initially stated that Christie’s campaign had fallen short of the required 2,000 certified signatures. In response, Christie’s campaign argued that they had collected 6,000 signatures, but this was dismissed by the court.
The judge’s decision highlighted that Christie’s campaign had failed to separate petition forms by town, as instructed by the Secretary of State. Additionally, they did not provide sufficient time to bring the multi-town signature sheets to the relevant municipalities before the deadline.
This setback for Christie’s campaign comes as he faces mounting pressure to withdraw from the race and support an alternative candidate to former President Donald Trump, who is currently the frontrunner in the GOP race. Christie’s strategy has been centered around the New Hampshire primary on January 23rd, but the challenges in Maine threaten to undermine his prospects.
Despite this setback, Christie still has the option to file as a write-in candidate in Maine. The deadline for doing so is December 26th, according to the Secretary of State’s office.
The Maine Republican presidential primary is scheduled for March 5th, with several leading candidates expected to be on the ballot. These include Trump, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, and pastor Ryan Binkley.
