AT&T Outage Affects Thousands of Customers Across the United States

On February 22, 2024, thousands of AT&T customers across the United States experienced widespread outages and service problems. According to Downdetector.com, a website that tracks such reports, tens of thousands of customers reported having no service, making it the most affected carrier during the incident.
The outages began around 4 a.m. EST and seemed to wane some two hours later, only to pick up again and reach about 60,000 at 11 a.m. EST. However, by 3:10 p.m. EST, AT&T had announced that the problem had been resolved.
Customers of other carriers, such as T-Mobile, Verizon, UScellular, and Consumer Cellular, also reported issues, though in much smaller numbers. T-Mobile and Verizon stated that their networks were operational, but some customers may have encountered problems when trying to reach people on another network.
The cause of the AT&T outage was initially unclear, but the company later attributed it to a software bug. In a statement on its website, AT&T said, “Based on our initial review, we believe that today’s outage was caused by the application and execution of an incorrect process used as we were expanding our network, not a cyber attack.”
The outage affected customers in various cities across the United States, including Washington, Miami, Detroit, St. Louis, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Francisco, Dallas, Atlanta, Seattle, Anchorage, and many others. The darker red areas on the map below show higher concentrations of reports.
