Algerian Defender Youcef Atal Suspended by Nice After Posting Antisemitic Video

3 min read

Algerian defender Youcef Atal has been suspended by Nice football club after allegedly posting an antisemitic video on social media. The video is said to relate to the conflict in Israel and Gaza. Atal, 27, has since deleted the controversial Instagram post and issued an apology. However, the Nice public prosecutor’s office has initiated a preliminary investigation into Atal on charges of “defending terrorism”.

In response to the incident, Nice announced the suspension of Atal “until further notice”. The club stated that while the player acknowledged his mistake and promptly removed the post, the nature and seriousness of the publication led to the decision to take immediate disciplinary action. Nice took the step prior to any potential actions that may be taken by sporting and legal authorities.

Additionally, Atal is being investigated by the prosecutor’s office for “public incitement to hatred or violence because of a particular religion” and by the ethics council of the French Football Federation (FFF). FFF president Philippe Diallo condemned hate speech, stating that it goes against the ethics and values that soccer strives to defend.

Youcef Atal, who has been capped 31 times by Algeria, has appeared in six matches for Nice in Ligue 1 this season. This incident follows another suspension related to the Israel-Gaza conflict, as Netherlands winger Anwar El Ghazi has also been suspended by his club side Mainz for a social media post about the ongoing conflict.
