Jacksonville Jaguars sign Nathan Rourke as backup for Trevor Lawrence

2 min read

The Jacksonville Jaguars have made a roster move in anticipation of quarterback Trevor Lawrence’s questionable status for Thursday night’s game against the New Orleans Saints. Lawrence, who is dealing with a sprained left knee, has been limited in practice for the second consecutive day. While expressing optimism about playing, Lawrence also acknowledged the need to consider the best long-term plan for his injury and the team’s success.

If Lawrence is unable to play, backup C.J. Beathard would make his first start since the 2020 regular-season finale with the San Francisco 49ers. However, to ensure additional depth at the quarterback position, the Jaguars have signed Nathan Rourke from their practice squad to the active roster. Rourke, a former standout in the Canadian Football League (CFL), will serve as the backup if Lawrence is unable to play.

Rourke, who started 11 games for the BC Lions in the 2021-2022 CFL season, had an impressive performance, throwing for 4,035 yards and 28 touchdowns. He achieved a remarkable completion rate of 78.7%, setting a new CFL record. Rourke’s outstanding performance earned him the CFL’s Most Outstanding Canadian award, further highlighting his skills and potential as a quarterback.

The addition of Rourke provides the Jaguars with a capable backup option and adds depth to their quarterback position. While Lawrence’s availability for the upcoming game remains uncertain, having Rourke as a backup gives the team some reassurance and flexibility in their game plan.

It is worth noting that Lawrence has been a durable player throughout his career, starting every game during his three professional seasons. The last time he missed a game was during his final collegiate year at Clemson, where he sat out consecutive games due to a neck injury and COVID-19 protocols. Considering his track record, the Jaguars and Lawrence will carefully consider his recovery and long-term health in making a decision about his availability for the game against the Saints.

As the situation unfolds, the Jaguars and their fans will anxiously await updates on Lawrence’s condition and whether he will be able to play. In the meantime, the team can take comfort in having a talented quarterback like Rourke ready to step in if needed.
