According to special teams coach Dave Toub, Mahomes has been showcasing his punting abilities during practice and has even been dubbed as the team’s “backup punter.” Toub expressed his astonishment, describing Mahomes’ talent as “unbelievable.” Fortunately, Townsend was able to play through the injury and handle the punting duties against the Broncos, negating the need for Mahomes to step in.

However, Townsend’s injury is still a concern, as he is listed on this week’s injury report. Despite this, Toub seems confident that Townsend will be able to play in the upcoming game against the Los Angeles Chargers. It’s worth noting that Mahomes has previous experience as a punter during his high school days at Whitehouse High in Texas. During that time, he punted 29 times, averaging 37.8 yards per punt.

It can be recalled that in the previous season, safety Justin Reid temporarily replaced injured kicker Harrison Butker during Week 1.
