Cricket Ireland levels one-day series against Scotland

2 min read

Cricket Ireland managed to level the one-day series against Scotland in Spain with a commanding 79-run victory, setting up an exciting decider on Saturday. Ireland’s strong performance was highlighted by Orla Prendergast’s well-crafted 64, as well as half-centuries from Leah Paul (58) and Amy Hunter (56). These contributions helped Ireland post a formidable total of 270-6 in their innings.

In response, Scotland made a promising start, reaching 43-0 in just 6.2 overs. However, Sarah Bryce’s dismissal triggered a collapse, and Scotland found themselves struggling at 59-3. Kathryn Bryce’s resilient knock of 67 provided some resistance, forming an 84-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Unfortunately for Scotland, she became one of Ava Canning’s four victims as the team was bowled out for 191 in 39 overs.

Scotland’s only late resistance came from Ailsa Lister, who scored a valuable 47 runs before being dismissed by Canning. Ireland’s Arlene Kelly sealed their victory by taking her second wicket when she had Olivia Bell caught by Amy Hunter. Scotland’s captain, Kathryn Bryce, followed up her highest international score of 78 in the previous match with another solid knock. However, her efforts were not enough to secure a series win for the Scots.

Ireland’s decision to bat first after winning the toss proved to be a wise one. Leah Paul provided a strong start as an opener, and her partnerships with Amy Hunter and others allowed Ireland to establish a strong position. Despite losing some wickets in the latter stages of their innings, captain Laura Delany’s unbeaten 28 runs propelled Ireland to a competitive total of 271.

Scotland’s reply got off to a decent start thanks to Sarah Bryce and Darcey Carter. However, three quick wickets within 16 runs put Scotland under pressure. Sarah Bryce was dismissed for 23, followed by Carter (16), and Priyanaz Chatterji (duck). Kathryn Bryce’s aggressive innings briefly revived Scotland’s hopes, but her dismissal by Freya Sargent, who bowled her out, halted their momentum. Sargent then took another wicket, clipping the top of Lorna Jack’s leg stump with the very next ball.

Although Ailsa Lister tried her best to stabilize Scotland’s innings, wickets continued to fall rapidly at the other end. This allowed Ireland to wrap up the victory comfortably, as Scotland finished with a score of 177-9. The win for Ireland sets up an exciting finale in the one-day series decider in Almeria on Saturday. Following this match, the teams will face each other in two further T20 contests at the Desert Springs venue on Tuesday and Wednesday.
