Discovering David Lynch’s Half-Finished Dune 2 Script

The intriguing find of a half-finished script for the sequel to David Lynch’s 1984 adaptation of Frank Herbert’s “Dune” has recently come to light. Max Evry, the author of “A Masterpiece in Disarray: David Lynch’s Dune. An Oral History,” unearthed the script in July of last year while working on his book. The script was found in Frank Herbert’s archives at California State University, Fullerton.

Lynch’s take on Herbert’s space opera, “Dune,” received mixed reviews upon its release and underperformed at the box office. However, before its release, there were plans to turn Lynch’s adaptation into a major movie franchise. Evidence of this mysterious script has been circulating since 1984 when Frank Herbert revealed in an interview with Prevue Magazine that he was working with and advising Lynch on a script for the sequel.

The script, which has not been widely available outside of UC Fullerton’s archives, has been praised by Evry for its potential to bring the complex story of “Dune Messiah” to the big screen. Despite the massive change Lynch made to the ending of the first film, Evry believes that Lynch’s vision for the sequel would have surpassed the source material.
