Castleford Tigers Appoint Craig Lingard as Head Coach, with Danny McGuire as Assistant

3 min read

Castleford Tigers have made a significant coaching appointment, with Craig Lingard taking over as head coach on a two-year deal. The Super League club has also secured the services of Danny McGuire, a former Super League great, who will join as Lingard’s assistant.

Lingard, 45, had been working as the assistant coach under Andy Last during the 2023 season. Prior to that, he had a successful stint as the head coach of Batley. During his time with Batley, Lingard led the team to the 1895 Cup final as well as the Championship Grand Final. Lingard also has previous coaching experience with Keighley Cougars, where he spent two and a half years in charge.

Expressing his excitement about the new role, Lingard said, “Something I’ve always aspired to be is a head coach in Super League and I’ve got that opportunity now. It has come a little bit sooner than I was expecting but it’s something I’m going to grab with both hands and hopefully be a success.”

Joining Lingard is Danny McGuire, a former half-back for Leeds Rhinos. The 40-year-old had a successful playing career before transitioning into coaching. McGuire spent time at Hull KR as a player and later became an assistant coach under Tony Smith in 2021. He continued in that role under Willie Peters, helping Hull KR reach the Challenge Cup final and Super League playoffs this season.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, McGuire said, “I’m still fairly early on into my coaching journey with loads to learn and experience, so I’m excited to be working alongside somebody who’s achieved so much in the game, so I’ll be picking his brains. Hopefully, we can gel really well and work well as a combination.”

Castleford Tigers have made significant strides in securing Lingard and McGuire’s services, indicating their commitment to success in the upcoming seasons. With Lingard’s experience in leading teams to cup finals and grand finals in the second tier, coupled with McGuire’s extensive playing experience and coaching development, the club is optimistic about the impact this coaching team will have.

The addition of Lingard and McGuire to the coaching staff will bring fresh ideas, strategies, and perspectives to Castleford Tigers. As Lingard steps into the role of head coach, he will be looking to build on the team’s foundations and guide them to success in the Super League. McGuire’s presence as Lingard’s assistant will provide valuable support and collaboration for the team’s overall development.
