Former Baltimore Prosecutor Faces Possible Disbarment

Marilyn Mosby, a former Baltimore prosecutor, is facing the possibility of disbarment amid ongoing legal battles. Mosby gained national attention for prosecuting Baltimore police officers after Freddie Gray, a Black man, died in police custody. However, she has now been found guilty of perjury charges for lying about her finances during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mosby allegedly withdrew $90,000 from Baltimore city’s deferred compensation plan in 2020, using the funds as down payments for a home in Kissimmee, Florida, and a condominium in Long Boat Key, Florida. She also falsely claimed financial hardships from the pandemic, despite receiving her full salary of $250,000.

Prosecutors argued that the money in the retirement account was held in a trust and belonged to the city until a planned participant was eligible to make a withdrawal. They maintained that Mosby was not entitled under federal law to access the funds in 2020 because her business, Mahogany Elite Enterprises, did not suffer any “adverse financial consequences” from the pandemic.

Mosby’s lawyer, Federal Public Defender James Wyda, did not respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

The Maryland Bar Counsel has filed a petition to suspend Mosby’s law license, and a new petition has been filed asking the Maryland Supreme Court to disbar her immediately due to her guilty verdict on two counts of perjury and two counts of making false statements on a loan application.

Mosby’s trial is scheduled to begin on January 18, 2024, and a judge has ruled that she will not be sentenced until the completion of her second federal trial.
