Michigan State basketball player Jeremy Fears Jr. has been discharged from the hospital after undergoing surgery to treat a gunshot wound to his leg. The incident occurred during a visit to his hometown over the holiday break. Fears’ father announced the news on Christmas Eve, sharing a video of his son using crutches to move around.

According to a statement released by Michigan State coach Tom Izzo, Fears underwent surgery on Saturday morning and is now resting comfortably. Izzo expressed his focus on supporting Fears’ recovery, stating, “While there is much we still don’t know, my focus is supporting Jeremy on his road to recovery.”

The shooting took place near Joliet, Illinois, late on Friday night or early on Saturday morning. ESPN reported that Fears was at home with a group of unidentified friends when a suspect armed with a handgun entered the premises and began firing. The suspect remains at large, and the motive behind the shooting is still unclear.

Police have provided a statement, confirming that an 18-year-old male and a 19-year-old woman were both injured in the shooting. The male victim sustained a wound to his thigh, while the female victim was wounded in the pelvis. Both injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Fears’ father shared a social media post expressing his gratitude for the support his son has received during this challenging time. He wrote, “Jr is doing really good . Discharged and headed home.”

Jeremy Fears Jr. is a freshman at Michigan State and has appeared in all 12 of the team’s games this season. He is averaging 3.5 points and 3.3 assists per game. Fears had a career-high 10 assists off the bench in a recent game against Stony Brook.

The Michigan State Spartans are scheduled to face Indiana State in East Lansing on December 30th.

Jeremy Fears Jr. is a McDonald’s All-American and a five-star recruit, having demonstrated exceptional talent in high school. He is expected to make a full recovery and continue his basketball career at Michigan State.
