If the DOOM meter reaches 100% before you enter the lighthouse, the game ends in failure.

But failure is not the end; it is an opportunity to learn and improve. World of Horror has a complex set of mechanics and an initially inscrutable interface, with small icons requiring close inspection. With each new playthrough, players encounter different cases with multiple endings and face different Old Gods, each with unique effects on the town. The game also features several stats, such as Strength, Knowledge, Dexterity, and Luck, which govern your success in different actions.

The game’s inventory system is limited, and players can acquire both natural and supernatural injuries that affect their stats. However, they can also find items that offer various benefits and drawbacks. The gameplay encourages experimentation, as players can choose to visit different locations, recruit friends, buy items, and use spells or rituals. Each decision has consequences, and cases can be resolved in unexpected ways.

Despite its strengths, one aspect of World of Horror that falls flat is its combat system. While the random events that trigger combat are spooky and add to the overall tension, the combat itself becomes repetitive. It’s a turn-based process where players queue up actions on a time bar, choosing from a limited set of options. While there are defensive and magical actions available, combat lacks the complexity and interest found elsewhere in the game.

However, despite this flaw, World of Horror is an outstanding horror game with many captivating aspects. From its tense music and effective sound effects to its clear art style and well-written narratives, the game immerses players in its unsettling world. It is clear that World of Horror achieves its intended vision, although it may not appeal to everyone.
